Since the early 80’s, there was a shift in Gospel music as brother and sister duo, BeBe and CeCe Winans, entered the industry. 36-years later, their music is still relevant in the Gospel world and has found its way in the recent stage play, Born for This: The BeBe Winans Story, a musical autobiography that tells the story of singer/songwriter BeBe Winans.
The play was directed by Charles Randolph-Wright and written by the play’s very own, BeBe Winans. The musical cast features his niece, Deborah Joy Winans, and nephew, Juan Winans. The show tells the story of the BeBe and CeCe’s transition from their Detroit home and family of ten to Pineville, South Carolina to join the cast of Jim and Tammy Baker’s Praise the Lord (PTL).
The two were members of the television broadcast for six years, integrating the Gospel media industry prior to branching into their own musical careers. The show portrays BeBe’s rise to fame as a singer and song writer, as well as his personal battles with sin, temptations, failures, and poor choices made during his career.
The production is packed with dancing and dynamic singing, which keeps its audience on their feet. According to DC Theatre of Metro Arts’ play review, “Everyone in the cast is stellar as a vocalist and terrific actors who fully bring to life themes about faith over fame. The penetratingly beautiful vocals of this incredible ensemble are the strongest feature of this show and make Born for This a production well worth seeing.”
The show is playing from July 1- August 28, 2016 at Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater – 1101 Sixth Street, SW, in Washington, DC.
