Amid the rise of COVID-19, social distancing has been the topic of discussion for the majority of the past couple of months. Despite the negative concerns, it seems like social distancing has actually caused people to come up with new ways to come together.
With the increased usage of apps such as Zoom, FaceTime, Google Duo, plus the live feature on Facebook and Instagram, social media has become the source of bringing people together in the place of attending social events.
For example, there has been a rise in virtual clubs or parties. DJs from all over are setting up equipment in their living rooms and playing music on either Instagram live or Facebook live. People have been tuning in and sharing these posts religiously. Some DJs have even had celebrity guests screen share during their live streams.
Schools across the country are shut down for the duration of the school year. As a result, every parent and guardian has had to wear the hat of an educator to their child while being guided by virtual lessons with teachers over the Internet. Many people are now working from home and meeting over the Zoom app with their company boards. Churches had begun to stream before the pandemic; however, more have begun not only streaming, but providing drive up services where congregations park and listen to sermons in parking lots.
There also has been a raised awareness for those who are considered essential workers. Grocery clerks and those in food service have had more support, while healthcare professionals and law enforcement are also being acknowledged and appreciated. Although we as a nation are going through a time of great uncertainty, one thing that is certain is the will to socially thrive in the midst of it all.
As uncertain as our future is because of the virus, is it possible that we can see a permanent improvement in society? Take a look at nature at this time.
Once released from quarantine, we have the opportunity to value our relationships, respect others regardless of economic class or race, and appreciate life. This time period is leveling the differences between us. Everyone will be able to think smarter and safer, as well as cherish others. Although we as a nation are going through a time of great uncertainty, on the other side of this time period, we will find a great opportunity of social improvement.
So, the next time you log on to Facebook or accept a FaceTime call, remember that though social distancing is temporary, it will force a bond that will be knitted in this generation forever. There will never be another year like 2020, so let’s allow our distancing to bring us closer in commonality.
