Recently I did an interview with Kia Stroman, owner of Fly Girls Pray Boutique. You may have seen her brand on social media or being worn by gospel celebrities such as Erica Campbell. Her t-shirts are available for men, women, and children. Kia has one goal in mind concerning Fly Girls Pray Boutique—to spread the gospel of Christ and to see people overcome the blows of life. Through her own struggles, God has given her a message of hope to share with the world and prove that you can be fashionable and give all the glory to God.
Deidra David: Why did Fly Girls Pray Boutique start?
Kia Stroman: I was in a very dark place so I left my job and I decided to say at home for 3 months to take care of family and myself. During this time, I believed in God for my healing. I had deep devotional times with God and I received an outpour of His Spirit. I asked God for and outlet to share this outpour through creativity. I love t-shirts and fashion. T-shirts go with anything; they are easy to dress up or down. I wanted to create fashion that has my faith attached. I wanted something to identify me as a woman of God, that when people see me they say, “she’s coming with something.” In the beginning, God kept saying to me, “Believe,” that became the first t-shirt design.
Deidra David: How do you feel about fashion and its place in Christianity?
Kia: Our generation is not going to church in big fancy hats. Churches are removing the stigma of looking a certain way; the old school way is not good bait for this generation. I want women to courageously live out their faith, including in their appearance. I often wear my t-shirts to service because church for me is 7 days a week and you can be fly and pray 7 days a week, you should.
Deidra David: Where do you see Fly Girls Pray Boutique in the future?
Kia: I definitely see more designs. It was always bigger than t-shirts, It was about the message. My goal is to continue to introduce people to Christ through the apparel.
The goal was always to spiritually uplift and empower women. I would like to have more women as ambassadors talking about faith and what it means to be a woman of God.
Deidra David: What motivates you?
Kia: Seeing people overcome boundaries and lifted out of darkness. People starting their own businesses, t-shirt lines, or just fulfilling their purpose, whatever they are called to do. Seeing that lets me know that the work that I am doing is effective.
Deidra David: Do you have a favorite scripture or saying?
Kia: Mark 11:23. “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.”
